Live from New York, it’s…Leadership Development!

I’m a fan of Saturday Night Live. The old Saturday Night Live. You know, with Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler and a host of other funny comedians.

(I got more interested in Saturday Night Live when a former SNL star attended our church for a season).

Here’s one of the things that I respect about Lorne Michaels, creator of SNL and driving force behind the show: he has a commitment to finding young talented actors and comedians and developing them into world class performers on his show.

However, anyone with even cursory knowledge of SNL knows that most of these comedians don’t stay there forever. Many go on to successful movie careers that are far beyond the scope of the SNL stage.

Yet here’s what amazes me: SNL continues on, even when these “anchors” leave the show. Yet the show focuses on developing new talent.

Here’s the lesson: instead of trying to hire established leaders from other churches (which is sadly becoming the norm these days), focus on developing leaders from within and you’ll find the next “superstar” leader from within your own ranks.

Great thoughts! This has been our strategy but the challenge for us is the amount of time it takes to raise up leaders.
